Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday said the Congress will be destroyed after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections because of the “quality of its leadership”.
Addressing an election rally in Mon, Nagaland, Mr. Shah was accused by a Congress spokesperson of twisting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s name to Rahul Gandhi’s “nature”.
The Congress, which contested 25 of Nagaland’s 60 seats, is no longer considered strong in the state after being wiped out in the 2018 assembly elections.
Referring to Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera’s “insult” by calling Prime Minister ‘Narendra Gautam Das Modi’, Mr Shah said the statement was in line with Mr Gandhi’s “character”.
But the use of “abuse” cost Mr Gandhi and the Congress opposition status in Parliament, he said, reminding people of the insult the Congress leader had heaped on Mr Modi.
At this rate, the Congress will soon become a party that will be difficult to spot even through binoculars, he added.
Mr. Shah, on a two-day visit to Nagaland and Meghalaya, also said that the Center has given top priority to the early resolution of the Naga political issue.
Despite signing agreements with two sets of extremist groups, the Naga peace process has not been resolved for more than 25 years.
Mr Shah expressed confidence that the BJP-Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party alliance would form the government after the February 27 elections.
