Disney+ Hotstar, one of India’s largest streaming platforms, recently made an announcement that will break many hearts. The OTT platform is home to a huge catalog of HBO shows like The Last of Us, House of the Dragon and Succession which also has a huge fan following in India. However, yesterday, March 7, the platform’s official Twitter handle revealed that no HBO content will be available on it after March 31. The news came as Disney CEO Bob Iger announced restructuring measures to become more cost-effective.
The official Twitter handle of Disney+ Hot Star , while answering a user’s question, revealed some shocking information. The user wanted to know that Season 2 of Perry Mason will be aired on the streaming platform. Answering this, Disney+ Hotstar Tweeted, “From March 31, HBO content will no longer be available on Disney+ Hotstar. You can continue to enjoy Disney+ Hotstar’s extensive content library of over 100,000 hours of TV shows and movies in 10 languages and coverage of major global sports events.
Disney+ Hotstar Loses HBO Content
But last month’s restructuring Disney Under Iger, 7,000 jobs were cut as part of an effort to save $5.5 billion in operational costs. The layoffs included 3.5 percent of Disney’s global workforce. While it was earlier believed that this cost-cutting move would not affect Disney+ Hotstar, a recent revelation by the streaming platform paints a grim picture.
Disney+ Hotstar has been streaming HBO content exclusively since 2016. Under the deal, the platform got a large catalog of content to broadcast in India. Some shows, eg game of thrones aired on the same day as US telecast, and in turn, attracted a large number of users to the platform.
However, now that the deal is up, subscribers will lose a large list of shows they currently have access to. Take a look at some of the biggest shows you won’t be able to watch after March 31.
