Six people have been arrested after the bodies of two minor Dalit sisters were found hanging from a tree in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri district on Wednesday evening. Police officials say that during the police encounter, one of the accused was injured by a bullet in the leg. Lakhimpur Kheri SP Sanjeev Suman told a press conference that the six accused have been identified as Chhotu, Junaid, Sohail, Hafeezul, Karimuddin and Arif. Preliminary investigation revealed that Sohail and Junaid took the two girls to a nearby field and raped them.

It was reported that the girls demanded that the accused marry them. He was then strangled to death. Hafeez, Arif and Karimuddin help Junaid and Sohail hang from the tree. SP Suman said that except Chhotu, all the accused were residents of Lalpur village in Lakhimpur Kheri. Chotu, who was a neighbor of the victim, introduced the two girls to the accused. The police official said that the post-mortem will be conducted in the next few hours.

The family of the two sisters, aged 17 and 15, said they were abducted from outside their home three hours before their bodies were found. The police have suspected suicide in the initial investigation. According to Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Suman, the post-mortem is being conducted in the presence of the deceased’s family. Locals protested and blocked roads after rumors spread on Wednesday that police had conducted post-mortems on the bodies.

At the same time, the police say that both the accused have allegedly confessed to having sexual relations with the girls. The six accused have been identified as Junaid, Sohail, Arif, Hafeez, Karimuddin and Chhotu. SP Sanjeev Suman told mediapersons that based on preliminary findings, the accused lured the two sisters on the spot after which they sexually assaulted the girls without their consent. After that, preliminary investigations revealed that the girls wanted to get married. Police claim that the accused killed the sisters allegedly on the insistence of the girls.
