A woman constable of the Border Security Force (BSF) in West Bengal’s Nadia district has accused a senior officer of rape. A first information report was lodged at the Bhawanipur police station here on Monday when the survivor came to the government-run SSKM Hospital for medical examination.
The alleged incident took place at Tangi border post under Krishnaganj police station in Nadia district. The officials had leveled allegations against his company commander, who is an inspector-rank officer.
“The inspector has been suspended and a sexual harassment committee has been set up. “If the accused is found guilty, we will take strict disciplinary action,” said BSF’s South Bengal Frontier spokesperson.
Women BSF personnel are deployed at several locations along the India-Bangladesh border because of the high population density along the border. On August 22, another allegation of rape of a 23-year-old woman by BSF personnel under Bagda police station in North 24 Parganas district came to light. Two BSF personnel were arrested for their involvement in the crime.
Recently, the Trinamool Congress leadership, including party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, raised the issue of the December 2022 killing of a Rajbanshi youth by BSF personnel in North Bengal’s Cooch Behar.
